The sun wasn't shining, but the campus sparkled as hundreds of alumni and guests converged for Homecoming '97 the weekend of October 4. The Class of '97 celebrated its Zero-year Reunion with a Friday night pub and a cookout at Higgins House. The Class of '92 gathered in record numbers for their 5-year Reunion barbecue with entertainment by Joypopper (formerly Big Character, a band founded and managed by classmates). Among the special guests were Father Peter Scanlon, Dean of Students Janet Begin Richardson, Professor Helen Vassallo, and Lisa Hastings, former director of Young Alumni Programs and advisor to the Student Alumni Society.
Along with the various competitions and athletic events, many groups held meetings and receptions. Women athletes gathered on the quad for a Mini-Reunion, where integrating sports and career in a post-college life was a big topic of conversation. The consensus was that WPI provided excellent preparation for both!
The halftime awards ceremony was brightened by a flash of the Goat and a can-can version of the "E to X" cheer, led by winners of the "Most Spirited Student" competition. After the game, the crowd filed down to Institute Park for the traditional Freshman-Sophomore Rope Pull.
It was the driest Rope Pull in years, as the Classes of 2000 and 2001 faced off on dry land, over the nozzle of a fire hose provided by the Worcester Fire Department. The small change in protocol, prompted by concern of high bacterial counts in Institute Pond, didn't dampen enthusiasm one bit. The crowd roared as both sides fought to escape the spray and the juicy mud puddle it created. After a protracted battle, the first freshmen got wet and the sophomores were declared victors. More refined entertainment was provided in an evening concert by the WPI Glee Club and the Rensselaer Chorale.
