When looking at stresses in cartilage, an important question is how to model the underlying bone.   As cartilage and subchondral bone are often between 0.5 and 3.0 mm, a model with that includes cartilage, subchondral and trabecular bone translates to time consuming analyses.   It is important to understand if and when underlying bone can be considered rigid.   For younger subjects with healthy bone, this is valid, but this is not necessarily true for subjects with osteoporosis.   See Displacement Analysis slideshow for details
