679. WY - It's a Gas! An easy WY mystery for those passing through this expansive state

N.B. As many letterboxers probably know by now, after planting well over 500 regular boxes, we have mostly gotten tired of leaving plastic containers out in the natural environment lately, so for the past few years, instead of actual boxes, we sometimes just leave in our wake small stones with stamps glued underneath that we call "travelin' lights". (Don't expect this to be a box!)

No, we’re not talking about Sinclair or any of those other petroleum products that can found in WY. We’re talking about what is supposedly the world’s largest example of this particular geothermal feature, found in a town whose name gives it all away, if you know Greek! You’ll even see a sign painted on the nearby cliff with a white arrow pointing to “the source” of this hydrogen sulfide gas. So, go there and find the adjacent large brown kiosk where you can read about the history, geology and chemical composition of this feature. Then, when the coast is clear, go around to the back of this wooden structure. Facing the left side, carefully step up a pink stone step or two to reach up top to the corner where wood and stone meet to find a 2” pink triangular stone with WY on back under a slightly larger tan rock. (Now go take a free 20-minute mineral soak nearby, thanks to Chief Washakie!)
