The Wang Towers in 2004

The Wang Towers

Shadow of a Wang logo

On Sunday 26 December 2004 I took a trip to visit the former headquarters of Wang Laboratories, Incorporated - the former Wang Towers complex at 1 Industrial Avenue in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. The week before, I had stayed up late reading Charles C. Kenney's 1992 chronicle of the spectacular rise and fall of Wang - "Riding the Runaway Horse". After reading the Wang story, I had to get a closer look at the buildings that I had previously only glimpsed while speeding by on the highway.

Shadow of two Wang logos

The Wang Towers form an imposing structure that dominates the landscape clear to the New Hampshire border. I photographed them on a bitterly cold and windy morning through spitting snow - three giants of unadorned grey concrete and shaded plate glass. I could still discern the shadows of the old blue Wang logos high on the walls. (These shadow logos are visible in the two close-up images on the left.) Even in their absence, the logos that once marked the Towers as the center of the globe-spanning Wang enterprise seem to speak louder than the present signage.
